KiwiRail have joined the National Railway Museum in recognising the importance of the DC class in New Zealand Railways development and have made DC4876 available for inclusion in the Museum collection. The bogie change has been done but after an approach from Dunedin Railways the locomotive has now been removed from Hillside shops and is currently at the Dunedin Railways site. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic Dunedin Railways asked if they could evaluate 4876 with a possibility of leasing her for use on their tourist trains. At the time of this publication this evaluation is still to go ahead but the outcome and future is unknown. If necessary, she can be towed to the Christchurch site for storage
