Description
The “On the Move” series of booklets were written by Les Dew and Mark Alexander and published in the mid-1990s as a collaboration between the Tramway Historical Society and the Christchurch Transport Board. It was originally intended as a history of the Christchurch Transport Board, which was being wound up; however, it morphed into a general history and stories of transport in the Canterbury region from the earliest days of European settlement in the 1850s through to 1989.
There are eight booklets in the series:
Volume 1: bullock to brougham – private road transport in early Christchurch
Volume 2: hailing a hansom – public transport and transport in trade and industry in Christchurch’s horse-drawn days
Volume 3: rails in the roads – the steam and horse tram era in Christchurch
Volume 4: the wire web – the Christchurch board and its early electric tramways 1903-1920
Volume 5: the country commuter – the regional railway network of Christchurch
Volume 6: the tidal travellers – the small ships of Canterbury
Volume 7: tram to the terminus – the Christchurch Tramway Board and its electric tramways 1921-54
Volume 8: buses to bristols – the buses of Canterbury 1904-1989
The series is a must-have for anyone interested in Christchurch history or transport history in general. Regrettably we are unable to sell single booklets; they are available as a set only.
